The sprite tool stops making the owner wait

  • The owner noticed that after submitting a sprite, the sprite tool took far longer than the other tools to clear the brief and bring up the next one. Measured, its page took 14 to 18 seconds to load. The art tool's took a third of a second. Both reload after a submit, so the owner was waiting about 15 seconds for every sprite.
  • The cause: every page load re-checked every sprite waiting for review. About 430 images were reopened and analysed each time, with nothing remembered from the last load.
  • The owner set two rules that fixed it. First, a sprite's checks now run in the background after the upload and never hold anyone up. Second, a submitted sprite is already approved, so it no longer waits in a review queue: the sprite tool and the games reject it further along if it doesn't work. The review tab is gone, and 88 sprites that were waiting went straight through.
  • The page now loads in under half a second: 14.1 seconds before, 0.45 after, measured by the sprite tool and confirmed independently.
  • The same day, a separate fix stopped upload cards freezing. After a drop that couldn't go straight onto its card, the card used to sit on "1 file uploaded" indefinitely. The shared upload code now always finishes. It says when a file was only kept for later, it gives up after two minutes with no answer, and no error can leave a card stuck.
